Ribbons of white minerals,
Quartz and lime deposits
Leach through cracks and
Braid their way through the
Largely granite outcropping
Twisting,
Linking,
Holding together
Like fatty strands in
Crisp bacon.

A new poem!
a freight train rumbles past
a snore from the next room
pushes away cold
daunting silence

Timing and Distance
(January 3, 2012)
Funny how a challenge motivates! No promises it's any good, but I'm happy it's something, since it's the first creative piece I've written in months.
try to remember
how she fell overboard
when she left the boat deck
perhaps she just
slipped off
quietly
into distressed waves
as she peered through
her telescope
gazing
reaching for stars
never once looking down

Ted Kooser Poems
(January 2, 2012)
Horse
In its stall stands the 19th century,
its hide a hot shudder of satin,
head stony and willful,
an eye brown as a river and watchful:
a sentry a long way ahead
of a hard, dirty army of hooves.
Screech Owl
All night each reedy whinny
from a bird no bigger than a heart
flies out of a tall black pine
and, in a breath, is taken away
by the stars. Yet, with small hope
from the center of darkness,
it calls out again and again.
Delights & Shadows.
